Alex Loredo, an 18-year-old from Harbison Canyon, California, is the proud owner of Marley, a Labrador. He initially adopted Marley to help the dog shed some excess weight due to health issues, and since then, they have become inseparable best friends.
Their unbreakable bond was put to the test last month when a dangerous encounter unfolded. Alex found himself face to face with a large rattlesnake, approximately one and a half feet in length, right outside his home. He was preparing for a potentially venomous snake bite when Marley, his faithful companion, sprang into action.
Without hesitation, Marley placed himself between the snake and Alex, barking furiously at the intruder. Marley’s bravery was remarkable, but it came at a cost. The rattlesnake struck him twice, once on the tongue and once on the neck. Alex reacted quickly, rushing to Marley’s aid to save him from the snake’s venom.
Blood was everywhere as Marley writhed in pain, and Alex rushed him to the nearest veterinary clinic, which was five miles away. With time of the essence, Alex tried to remain calm while racing against the clock to get his loyal friend the help he needed.
Marley was transferred to a pet hospital 25 miles away, where he received two vital antivenom shots. He had to stay in the hospital for several days, and veterinarians were initially concerned that he might lose his tongue due to the bites.
Fortunately, Marley’s strong spirit prevailed, and he made a full recovery, reuniting with his delighted owner. Alex emphasized Marley’s heroic actions, stating that without his dog’s intervention, he would have likely been bitten, and the outcome could have been much worse.
Marley’s medical procedures were costly, but Alex was willing to go to great lengths to save his best friend’s life. Thankfully, generous donations on a GoFundMe page exceeded their $8,000 goal.
