New research on Prognathodon overtoni species revealed

Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Femke Holwerda studies mosasaurs from the Bearpaw Formation of southern Alberta. Here, she’s sitting next to Prognathodon overtoni, a mosasaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous.

This specimen is notable for its particularly heavy set of jaws.

Dr. Holwerda is creating a mold of some of this specimen’s teeth.

After creating the molds, Dr. Holwerda will be able to create cast teeth to study. This will allow her to сoпfігm the differences in feeding style among marine reptiles based on each tooth’s wear.
